Taking a joint stand for justice
Nepal lies to the north of India, in the foothills of the Himalayas. It is roughly three and a half times the size of Switzerland, with a population of approximately 25.7 million. The society is marked by a strictly hierarchical caste structure and deeply rooted social taboos, particularly in the desperately poor west of the country. A lack of infrastructure, regular periods of hunger, fatalism and growing impoverishment affect the casteless and women in particular.
The great majority of the population works in agriculture. For the poor, their own fields yield nowhere near enough to provide subsistence. Malnutrition and poor diet are a widespread problem. The insufficient food production, coupled with the great social inequalities, are the reasons why numerous families are forced into debt in order to secure their livelihood, at least in the short term. They are caught in a vicious circle from which many cannot escape.
In the majority of the target groups, hopelessness and fatalism are replaced by hope of a better future and self –confidence. By strengthening subsistence, poverty is being tackled. In the medium term, it is planned to integrate the mountain region in the west of the country, which is difficult to reach, more fully into the programme.
