The way out of indebtedness and dependence
The Republic of India is characterised by huge diversity. A distinguishing feature of the whole of Indian society is the caste system. Although it has been officially abolished by the Indian constitution, this highly complex system of belonging to a particular social group continues to have a profound effect on the lives of many Indians. Severely disadvantaged population groups such as the Dalits (casteless, untouchables) and the Adivasi (members of tribal communities) experience the caste system as a tool used to justify systematic exploitation and marginalisation.
